What Are Projector Lumens?

Lumens measure the total light output of a projector. The higher the lumen count, the brighter the projected image - and the better it performs against ambient light in the room.

For commercial environments, getting lumens right matters more than almost any other specification. A boardroom with large windows, a gym with overhead fluorescent lighting, or a conference hall with minimal blackout all demand significantly more brightness than a darkened training room.

Choosing the Right Projector Brightness for Your Space

Meeting Rooms

For small rooms where lighting can be controlled, 2000 to 4000 lumens is often suitable. Standard boardrooms with overhead lighting usually need 4000 to 6000 lumens.

Classrooms and Education

Classrooms with fluorescent lighting are demanding spaces. 3500 to 5000 lumens covers most classroom setups, while lecture theatres benefit from 6000 lumens and above.

Conference and Large Venues

Mid-size conference spaces work well with 6000 to 9000 lumens. Larger halls, ballrooms and event venues should usually be specified at 10000 lumens or above.

Outdoor and High Ambient Light

Outdoor projection or very bright spaces require 15000 lumens and above. Throw distance, projector placement and screen surface also become important at this level.

Not Sure Which Lumen Output You Need?

Tell us your room size, lighting conditions and how you plan to use the projector. Our team will recommend the right specification.

Laser Projectors vs Lamp Projectors

Most commercial projectors use either a traditional lamp light source or a laser light source. Lamp projectors usually have a lower upfront cost, but lamps degrade over time and need replacing.

Laser projectors maintain brightness more consistently, need less maintenance and are usually better suited to daily commercial use. For meeting rooms, classrooms, venues and business installations, laser projection is often the better long-term option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Projector Lumens

How many lumens do I need for a projector in a meeting room?

For a standard meeting room with overhead lighting and some natural light, 4000 to 6000 lumens covers most scenarios. Smaller rooms with good blackout can work with 3000 to 4000 lumens.

What is a good lumen count for a commercial projector?

For most commercial environments, 4000 to 8000 lumens covers boardrooms, classrooms, training rooms and mid-size conference spaces. Larger venues often need 10000 lumens and above.

Do more lumens always mean a better projector?

Not necessarily. More lumens improve brightness in demanding lighting conditions, but they do not improve resolution, contrast or image accuracy. The goal is to match brightness to the space.

What is the difference between a 4000 lumen and 8000 lumen projector?

An 8000 lumen projector produces a brighter image and handles ambient light more effectively than a 4000 lumen projector. The right choice depends on room conditions and screen size.

Can I use a 360 or 700 lumen projector in an office?

Only if the room can be fully darkened. For a standard office or meeting room, a minimum of 3000 to 4000 lumens is usually recommended.

Do you supply and install commercial projectors across the UK?

Yes. ScreenMoove supplies and installs commercial projectors for UK businesses, including meeting rooms, education spaces, gyms, venues and multi-site projects.
